How To Fix Missing Plug-in Issue in Chrome

Posted by Aaron West at 12:28 PM in Mac

Back in April I blogged about an issue I found with the Chrome browser where the Flash Player debugger wasn't working properly. That post has received a number of views and has helped a few folks get around the issue. I recently ran into a similar issue where viewing PDF files in Chrome caused the following screen to display. NOTE: I believe this issue only pertains to the dev channel version of Chrome.

Somewhere along the way Chrome has added it's own PDF viewer plug-in that has taken over the browser. Fortunately, fixing this issue is just as easy as fixing the Flash Player debugger issue. I want the Preview application on Mac OS X to be used for PDF's instead of Chrome's default plug-in. To make this happen you open Chrome's plug-in preferences window (Preferences - Under the Hood - Content Settings (button) - Plugins - Disable individual plug-ins (text)) and disable the Chrome PDF Viewer. After making this change everything should be back to normal.

    it didn't work...

  3. I think one thing you need to add is that for the change to take effect, you must close the browser and re-open. I noticed one of the posts said it didn't work and that might be why. Also, since Chrome updated, the path is slightly different: Customize button (wrench) > Options > Under the Hood > Content Settings (button) > then under "Plugins", "Disable individual plug-ins...". Or you can bypass all that and just type "about:plugins" in the Google Chrome address bar. Hope that helps.

  4. Thank you for the comment Linda. I'll look into making the changes you suggest over the next few days.

I FOUND A FIX. If you click on 'details' at the top right, and expand the Flash section (probably at the top of the list), you may have multiple versions of the same Flash enabled - disable one of these. It SHOOULD work. Just worked for me! Good luck.

  16. Charles, thanks for posting the info; I'm glad it helped others. I'm curious why your fix works versus what I posted in this blog entry. I've tested and retested and each time what I suggest in this post fixes the problem. Can you shed any light on this?

If the plugin is already disabled, reenable it. At least that is what worked for me.

Anybody else finding this browser counterintuitive and hard to deal with? I like the interface and I've been happy with chrome for a while but I'm beginning to suspect it's not worth the effort.

Here's the solution. It worked for me:

First go to Options then Under the Hood
at the Privacy section choose Content settings.
Scroll down to Plug-ins,click Disable individual plug-ins
Check if these two plug-ins are disabled :

    Flash (2 files) - Version: 11,1,102,55
    Shockwave Flash 11.1 r102
    Name:   Shockwave Flash
    Description:   Shockwave Flash 11.1 r102
    Version:   11,1,102,55
    Location:   C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\16.0.912.75\gcswf32.dll
        Disable
    MIME types:
    MIME type   Description   File extensions
    application/x-shockwave-flash   Adobe Flash movie
    .swf
    application/futuresplash   FutureSplash movie
